Year after year Montreal home ownership became less and less affordable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2426\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.olgaouspenski.net\/blogwp1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/annual-report-300.jpg?resize=300%2C192\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"192\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Montreal\u2019s real estate market is about to become a game of musical chairs, and anybody who doesn\u2019t get a seat soon could be left standing, permanently.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">An average person with average income can still entertain thoughts of buying a house downtown. The slow but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.centris.ca\/fr\/outils\/statistiques-immobilieres\">steady increases in prices<\/a> \u2013 two, three, four per cent \u2013 can act like the proverbial slowly heating water the frog doesn\u2019t know is about to boil. But if you\u2019re renting now, and figure you\u2019ll buy a house someday when that next promotion comes through or the baby\u2019s born, it might be too late.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">All the signs\u00a0of a market on the brink of unaffordability are there. Worries about a saturated condo market sagging in 2015 turned around sharply in 2016. Montreal registered the lowest unemployment rate in 30 years last December, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cicnews.com\/2016\/09\/canada-welcomed-record-320932-new-immigrants-immigration-numbers-set-increase-098533.html\">immigration levels are skyrocketing<\/a>, with the first six months of 2016 \u2013 the latest figures available \u2013 outstripping all of 2015.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And foreign investors are almost certainly already on their way to the next undervalued, untapped real estate market now <a href=\"http:\/\/business.financialpost.com\/personal-finance\/mortgages-real-estate\/ontario-slaps-15-tax-on-foreign-buyers-expands-rent-control-in-16-point-plan-to-cool-housing\">that Ontario has imposed\u00a0a 15 per cent tax<\/a> on foreign buyers in Toronto as B.C. did for Metro Vancouver. More money drives prices up. So does more people.
